Breaking down the most profitable SEC basketball teams to bet on entering March
With the calendar preparing to flip over to March, it’s a good time to check in on some key against-the-spread records in the SEC so far this season.
A lot of the programs who are currently atop the SEC regular season standings are also some of the best-performing teams against the spread so far this season. Likewise, teams at the bottom of the league in the actual standings have also struggled vs. the number in 2023-24.
Here’s a breakdown of the most profitable teams to bet on in the SEC so far this season:
Most profitable SEC basketball teams to bet on (All games)
Team | ATS Wins | ATS Losses | Net Units |
South Carolina | 19 | 8 | 9.27 |
Auburn | 17 | 10 | 5.45 |
Kentucky | 16 | 11 | 3.55 |
Alabama | 16 | 11 | 3.55 |
Mississippi State | 14 | 12 | 0.73 |
Tennessee | 13 | 13 | -1.18 |
Georgia | 13 | 13 | -1.18 |
Florida | 13 | 13 | -1.18 |
Ole Miss | 13 | 14 | -2.18 |
LSU | 12 | 15 | -4.09 |
Vanderbilt | 11 | 15 | -5.00 |
Texas A&M | 11 | 16 | -6.00 |
Arkansas | 9 | 18 | -9.82 |
Missouri | 7 | 20 | -13.64 |
Top takeaway: South Carolina leads the way
South Carolina has been the SEC’s biggest surprise this season, so it makes sense to see the Gamecocks atop this chart. They’ve also been by far the SEC’s best team against the spread as an underdog this season (as you’ll see later on). South Carolina has won outright as an underdog 10 times so far this season — a record that includes 8 SEC contests.
South Carolina has covered 8 of its last 11 overall, so it seems the market hasn’t quite caught up to how good the Gamecocks are. South Carolina is also 11-2 against the number away from home (including 3-0 neutral site), which suggests it could continue to beat market expectations in the SEC Tournament as well as the NCAA Tournament if it gets there.

Top takeaway: Alabama is comfortable as a front-runner
Alabama has been excellent as a favorite against the number this year. That’s true for games that were supposed to be close as well as contests where the Tide were favored by more than double digits. Nate Oats’ squad is 7-3 against the spread this year when favored by 9.5 points or fewer. On the other side, they are 8-3 vs. the number when favored by 10+ points.
Alabama has run into problems as an underdog, however. The Tide are just 2-5 ATS as a dog this year and have only won 1 of those games outright (as a 1-point underdog in Starkville). Generally speaking, when the market believes Alabama is out-matched, it is correct.

Top takeaway: Back Kentucky as an underdog
Kentucky has been a bit inconsistent this season — particularly on defense — but the Wildcats have been excellent as an underdog this season (albeit in a relatively small sample). Kentucky’s only against-the-spread loss as an underdog this season was against Texas A&M back on Jan. 13. The Wildcats were very unlucky to not get a cover in that game, as they lost by 5 in overtime as 3-point dogs.
Kentucky has a deep bench, multiple elite shooters and great guard play — all of which gives the ‘Cats a chance to play with just about any team in the country on any given day. The next time UK will be an underdog will likely be in its regular season finale against Tennessee in Knoxville on March 9.
