Chris Doering and Peter Burns declared their levels on the panic meter for the SEC heading into Week 3 of the college football season.

The SEC Network broadcasters differed in their assessment of the state of the conference that currently features No. 1 Georgia, No. 10 Alabama, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 14 LSU and No. 17 Ole Miss.

Doering has the panic meter at a 9 for the SEC and explains why.

“If you look at the schedule, the reputation that the College Football Playoff committee is going to base their decision making on when we get to November and December, it’s already in the barn,” Doering said. “You’ve already played the majority of your big out of conference games.”

Doering doesn’t think end of the regular out-of-conference matchups will bolster resumes enough.

“What are you going to hang your hat on?” Doering said. “If you go out [Arkansas] and beat BYU? Or if you get a win over Georgia Tech if you’re Georgia? Show me where the reputation can be changed before the end of the year….We’re going to have to depend on Georgia if we’re going to have any hope…”

Burns meanwhile isn’t as pessimistic, sliding the scale down to 4 on the panic meter.

“The reputation can be changed if Georgia runs the table or Alabama runs the table or LSU runs the table,” Burns said. “…You’ve won the national championship in 13 of the last 17 seasons. Georgia’s the No. 1 team in the country. Although, being a little more pedestrian early. They haven’t really been tested.”

In Week 3, Georgia hosts South Carolina and Alabama travels to South Florida, while Tennessee heads to Florida, LSU has a road matchup at Mississippi State and Ole Miss welcomes Georgia Tech.
