College baseball umpire draws heat for absurd called 3rd strike to end game

One college baseball umpire is drawing some criticism after a ridiculous ending to one game.
Friday night, Mississippi Valley State was playing against New Orleans. New Orleans held a 7-3 lead with 2 outs in the 9th with the game looking like it would conclude without drama involved. That’s when things took a turn.
With the count at 1-1 on the batter, the umpire called strike 2 on a pitch that appeared low and was borderline at best. The batter reacted emotionally and voiced his displeasure at the call.
Then, with the count at 1-2, the umpire rang up the batter on a pitch that was clearly wide of the strike zone and very low. Both teams and the announcer were clearly shocked at the call with the New Orleans catcher even trying to console the hitter afterward.
“That’s down — oh my gosh! Wow, he got rung up on ball 2 and the game is over! Oh my goodness, that is horrific,” exclaimed the announcer.

This is a division 1 baseball game… Can’t even call it a terrible call. Umpire made it personal. ???? pic.twitter.com/zXOvzDmIbd

That type of ending understandably generated some buzz on social media:

I can’t get over how impressively the catcher handles this situation. Just immediately takes over. https://t.co/BnesDtJsiy

Yeah this is horrendous. I think it would have been called a strike by the ump if he rolled the ball to the plate. https://t.co/UGm6CZGK2f

Doesn’t matter if you think that the batter overreacted on the first pitch, you just don’t blatantly mis-call out of spite like this. Ump shouldn’t be near a competitive game for a long while https://t.co/TCUMhRrOC8

Strike 3 was definitely… https://t.co/5cY82fIKQz pic.twitter.com/dc3to4qxDs

What a disgrace. That ump should never call another game behind the plate. https://t.co/MdRWANTDb5

Umpire should lose his job. That’s just spiteful and abuse of his role and power. https://t.co/bQhvYhqNGB

Credit to catcher for calming situation. Umpire should be suspended. Simple. Without consequences nothing to prevent him from doing it again. https://t.co/tZtTy6RLjZ

Tip of the cap to the catcher who was mature but this umpire should never call again, on any level. https://t.co/WKFmhqtN9Y

Disgraceful. Reggie Drummer didn’t like being showed up and made up his mind about a call before it was thrown. Be a professional. https://t.co/7YtBvR2t3q
