Major League Baseball could be making a return to the diamond much sooner than expected.

With the start of the baseball season postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, there is not only uncertainty regarding the potential start date for the baseball season, there is some doubt that the season can even be played in 2020.

For those concerned about losing the baseball season, Jeff Passan of ESPN has some insight into the possibility of Major League Baseball returning in May.

According to Passan, MLB is working on a plan that would have all 30 teams play in and around Phoenix to start the season. There would be no fans in the stadiums and players, coaches, umpires and essential personnel would all be mostly quarantined in hotels when not playing, only leaving the hotels to travel to the stadium to play.

The plan includes possibly allowing teams to carry larger rosters in the event that a player tests positive for coronavirus and has to be quarantined from his team for 14 days.

In accordance with social distancing, umpires would not be directly behind catchers and batters at home plate. Instead, an electronic strike zone system would be put into place. Players would not congregate in the dugout, either, they would sit in the empty stands and spread six feet out from one another.
