Danny Kanell goes on pro-UCF Twitter rant following Knights' win over Temple
The UCF Knights needed a second-half comeback to earn a 52-40 victory over Temple on Thursday night, but at the end of the game, they remained undefeated, improving to 8-0.
However, not everyone was impressed with the win. In fact, some said that it showed UCF’s offense is elite, but the defense can’t hang with anyone.
That prompted analyst Danny Kanell to go on a pro-UCF rant, comparing the Knights to last year’s offense-heavy Oklahoma squad:
Congrats to UCF for extending streak!
People saying “no way is this a playoff team giving up 40 points to Temple” are dumb.
Just remind them last year NOBODY had a problem with Oklahoma getting in after giving up 41 to Baylor who went 1-11 last year#doublestandard #justwin

Kinda like Sooners last year?? https://t.co/VHuAAyKk6g

I don’t think UCF deserves a spot in a 4 team playoff. But it’s not their fault. Instead of trolling them why aren’t more analysts bringing up the need to change the playoff to actually give them a chance???

And even worse the head of the playoff Bill Hancock teases them by saying “you never know – maybe they have a shot at getting in” when there is ZERO chance they do.

It does seem like things are trending toward an eight-team playoff, with five spots for Power 5 conference champs, one Group of 5 team and two wildcards. However, that’s not the current system.
How will the Knights fare in the next CFP rankings? We’ll have to wait to see how the rest of the Week 10 action plays out.
This discussion ends when UCF schedules tougher teams or moves to a Power 5 conference. Until then, it’s just nice theater.
This is it. Bottomline their schedule is garbage and remains trash for the foreseeable future. Nobody’s fault but their own.
Yeah, their conference sucks but they could easily schedule one P5 team that is worth a crap and maybe have something to hang their hat on. It would still only be one win or loss though. Still not impressive if they just beat one quality team the entire season.
Give them the Sugar Bowl against whoever’s the highest ranked SEC teM not in the playoff. I’d be completely confident in LSU, UF, UGA, UK, TAMU,or Bama, if we were to miss out, to manhandle UCF.The only one that would be closer than 3 scores might be UK, but even the Cats would likely ur control the whole game.
Very similar to the end of ’07 season. LSU went to the BCS Champ. game and UGA was SEC rep. in the Sugar. The same UGA team that got trounced by Tenn in the regular season. Hawaii was the cocky and mouthy undefeated nobody with a “Heisman caliber” QB like UCF that was sent to teach UGA and the SEC a lesson in New Orleans. That didn’t end well at all! The 49-10 score did not begin to tell the brutal beating that was inflicted on Hawaii. Heck even the UGA punter nearly knocked out one of their cheap shot artist DL that tried to shove him after the play. Footage of the fat pineapple eater flailing on the carpet was hilarious! I can envision all of the “but, but, but UCF” bullcrap from all of the commentators now. Why doesn’t Randy White or whatever that crybaby AD’s name is, just pull the rest of the little stepsister schools and form another division. It happened in 1978. All these Non-P5 schools want P5 money without the a$$-whippings that come with it. To keep getting that money they should have to take the whippings from the big-time programs as well as give some out.
Group of 5 teams have been highly succesful in NY6 bowl games in the past 5-6 years. UCF 2-0, Houston 1-0 and Boise State. Look for the trend to continue with UCF or Houston.
Thats insane to include Florida, A&M and Kentucky. We’ve seen Florida get beat by 20, Florida getting it handed to them by Missouri, Kentucky squeaking by Missouri and getting beat bad by GA.A&M cant beat anyone. UCF would throw 50 on Florida, A&M or Kentucky. The defense is not good but gets turnovers and the offense is as talented as anyone outside of Tua. UCF or Houston will defeat their SEC opponent in the NY6 bowl.
You’re correct about the teams you mentioned being beaten they way they have. However, that was against other SEC schools, not the 2A Highschool teams of the American. Florida would clamp down on the pass game, as they have shown that they are dangerous when they aren’t guessing. A&M would be able to curb it enough and out depth the squires in the second half to pull away late. Kentucky would ram it down UCF’s throat and control the clock, there line would be in milton’s grill all night. I’m glad you mention Mizzou. That’s one I forgot. They would win too. An absolute shootout, but still a W.
It’s hard to take Kanell seriously. Someone should remind him that in addition to giving up 41 to Baylor, Oklahoma had wins over #2 Ohio State, #11 Oklahoma State, #8 TCU, and #10 TCU (Big 12 Championship). That’s why they got into the playoff.
That win over Temple was impressive. I mean who doesn’t allow 670 yards and 40 points to Temple this year? Oh, besides UCF…no one.
If they do go to 8 I really hope they dont give 5 spots to power 5 champs. Hell, a 4 loss team could win the pac 12 this year.
The 5 Conference Champs plus 3 at-large i.e. next 3 highest ranked non-champs. Protects ND and the Service Academies and only adds one game to the overall schedule for two teams. How can every other level of NCAA football have a real playoff and FCS can’t figure it out?
UCF plays absolutely nobody, and they still struggle. We’ll see how they handle Cincinnati, USF, and Houston (assuming they meet in the AAC championship game). Much better teams than the teams they’ve been struggling to beat so far.
Well everyone said everything I was going to say. Well except for questioning why Kanell still has a job “analyzing” football? They gave up 670 yards to Temple, at home. I can’t imagine what Tua and company would do to them. Heck, Drew Lock might even complete some passes against them!
Be nice Cody. No surprise Josh H is running his patented Texas Conference offence, which includes zero defense. His mind set: Is not you can score 80 points in 60 minutes you can beat anyone… in the texas conf.
Oh, come on. Nothing wrong with a little lighthearted trash talk. I read an interesting stat on an article here yesterday that said Hall, after only playing in the first three games, still remains the leader in receiving yards. That explains a good bit about Lock’s performance, imo. Y’all need to get Dooley out of there, have Odom go back to DC, and bring in someone like Kiffin, Bryan Harsin from Boise, or Neal Brown from Troy. Just to pump some new life into the program.
Who still takes this guy seriously? UCF might be a decent team, but if they were to play a top 50 schedule they would be exposed badly. Yes their offense can put up points but if they played a SEC schedule they would be average. OU played several ranked teams last year and had the Heisman winning QB. Baker would have thrown for 700 yards and 10 TD’s against UCF. Get a life Kanell and quit hating on the best conference in College Football.
How in the world can someone conclude UCF’s O can “score on anyone” when they haven’t yet actually scored on any defense in the top 50. Just because your offense looks great against glorified tackle dummies doesn’t mean they can score on an actual defense. Lol. Circular reasoning works because circular reasoning works because…
Gators shouldnt talk right now. A 20 point loss and a 21 point shellacking going down at home. Milton would shred Florida’s secondary. I hoped UCF would play Florida, but at this rate the Gators will play USF in the Gasparilla Bowl.
This discussion should have ended in the bowl game last year. Thanks for nothing, Auburn!

I thought everyone knew Kannell is an idiot. I’m not sure how many people have watched UCF play but I have watched 3 of their games. I think the O is ok but nowhere elite. They never pull the starters before they are up by forty and they never take the foot off the gas. Trouncing a crapping team and running up the score doesn’t make you great.
Kanell has been and remains an idiot.
I love how people all say UCF has to play tougher teams…PLAY US!!! No one of your P5 teams will ever seek out a game with UCF because they dont want to add a school they do not feel will help them on their attempt to get to the Playoffs. So we are in a no win scenario with your P5 team turning down a chance to play UCF. Our UCF AD is pushing for tougher schedules…but apparently you do not want to risk a loss to UCF. So put up or shut up!! Play us!! Tell your schools AD to add UCF to their schedules!! We want it…bring it ON!!!
Or do what others have done before you and go play the big boys instead of making ridiculous demands for your home and homes in your dinky stadium. Go beat them and take what you want.
