Coach fired after lopsided season-opening loss to Deion Sanders' Jackson State program
Nick Saban has a reputation as a coach-killer in the Southeastern Conference but not even he has managed to get a coach fired following a season-opening loss.
That is the fate of Edward Waters coach Greg Ruffin, who lost to Deion Sanders’ Jackson State team 53-0 in the season opener this FCS season.
Edward Waters College is based out of Jacksonville. News of Ruffin’s dismissal was first reported by Cole Pepper of News4Jax.
Ruffin had been the head coach at Edward Waters since 2018. He leaves the school with an overall record of 5-18 following the loss to Jackson State. Ruffin took over the program following a winless 2017 campaign.
Wow, I am sure every coach in College football will be eying that great HC job. I mean Edward Waters! Who wouldn’t want to grab that job!
LOL, never even heard of Edward Waters until Deion got him fired
I thought the name of the school was Muddy Waters.
Deon the new HBCU Nick Saban? Beating people so bad that it get s the opposing coach fired?
Zzzzzzzzzzz. C’mon Deion. Your name is going to get you some decent talent in these pandemic times, but your players get to beat up on a bunch of nobodies all year long and then football will be over for most of them. Recruiting will tamp down once the media hype dies down. We’re waiting for you to move up to a Group of 5 school or even a P-5 school to see what you can really do.
What’s the point of firing a coach after the first game? You basically are giving up on the season.
I think they pretty much gave up on him after last season. Greg Ruffin was hired after the 2017 season and had a record of 5-17 at Edward Waters, including a record of 1-10 last season, many of which were blow out losses. It’s a small HBCU college with only about 3,000 enrolled students. Not sure how you get an upgrade at coach. They probably look at successful local high school coaches or HBCU coordinators for talent.
I thought it was a guy name Edward Waters, which of course it was but who knew he had a place named after him.
Back in the hood he was known as Eddie “Muddy” Waters. It wasn’t because he could sing or compose music, but because he was incapable of keeping himself from coming home a mess after playing outside. Who knew they’d name a college after him?
