Eli Drinkwitz speculates on Texas A&M QB situation, calls out Aggies for depth chart ‘semantics’
Eli Drinkwitz spoke about Texas A&M’s quarterback situation during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.
The Aggies have dealt with injuries at that position this year, as starter Conner Weigman has been out since Week 2 with a shoulder injury. However, coach Mike Elko said this week that Weigman is a game-time decision for Saturday vs. Mizzou. The program also has Weigman listed as the starter on the team’s depth chart this week.
Drinkwitz isn’t buying it.
He told reporters on Tuesday that he expects Marcel Reed to get the nod.
“I know on their depth chart it says the other kid is the starting quarterback,” Drinkwitz said. “But I mean, that’s just semantics in my opinion. [Reed] is 3-0 as the starter and whether [Weigman] is listed as questionable or whatever, I don’t see them going back. So, they’re 3-0, they clearly have a different offense identity with [Reed] as the quarterback and they’ve developed an offense that fits around his system
“It’s a lot different than the first game of the year. So if they go with the other one, they go with the other one, but they’ve already kind of built the offense towards Marcel.”
As Drinkwitz noted, Reed has led A&M to a 3-0 record as the starting quarterback this season. On the year, he’s completed 54.4% of his passes for 585 yards, 6 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. Reed has also rushed for 230 yards and a couple more scores on the ground.
Kickoff from College Station is set for 12 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
