ESPN getting hammered for its broadcast of SEC basketball game
COVID has led to more games being called remotely by broadcasters. When technical difficulties happen with broadcasters away from the game, viewers are sometimes left with silence, one-person broadcasts or low-quality audio.
ESPN ran into technical difficulties with the broadcast of Saturday’s Alabama-Mizzou basketball game. Here’s the background on the situation:
And now Karl Ravech is calling this game off his phone, very similar to Mark Jones a few weeks ago. My gracious, simply unbelievable to start off your Saturday. https://t.co/2Kik9Pd41J

Is Karl Ravech calling this BAMA-Mizzou game on his phone? #ItJustMeansMore pic.twitter.com/IX6b004dwe

As you might expect, Ravech broadcasting via phone was not well-received by Twitter. Here’s a small sample of the reaction:
Karl Ravech is trapped inside a metal can

No. 18 #Mizzou leads No. 10 Alabama 23-15 with 11:32 to go in the game. The Tigers have as many turnovers as the quality of Karl Ravech microphone – 0

And now Karl Ravech is on, calling the game from underground it seems https://t.co/hp47h8KDOz

The one time Mizzou gets on ESPN and they got Karl Ravech calling this game from the bottom of the ocean

Karl Ravech doing this Bama/Mizzou game from his cell phone right now is a prime example for why broadcasting from remote locations is not practical and should not become the norm going forward.

Jimmy Dykes is in love with Herb Jones and Karl Ravech is on his cellphone calling this game LOL.

Based on the audio quality, I assume Karl Ravech is calling into this broadcast from Narnia.

Yo @espn I'd rather listen to silence than what you're trying to pass off right now. Goodness.

First Mizzou game on big ESPN and play-by-play is talking through a can

What is espn doing?

Please don’t make us listen to someone commentate this game through a phone @espn
— Mizzou (@HolideyMutt) February 6, 2021
Thankfully, the phone broadcast is over. Ravech is back to normal audio quality.
ESPN does a much better job covering social issues than it does sports. Too bad the SEC Network is run by them.
♂️
So true
I don’t remember ESPN having anything to say about what happened in Portland this past year. When an entire city block (including police station) is overtaken and over-run by thugs you’d think they would have a word or two about the injustice of that act.
Nice win today by Mizzou!
Native southerners employed by the SEC/ESPN network don’t want to travel to 10 degree temperatures in Columbia, Missouri for a basketball game.
It’s not as bad as the hurricane in Louisiana that sent the LSU team to play their football game in Columbia. You take the good with the bad or you can whine about it like you do.
So several folks with nothing better to whine about, whined out some tweets because audio of a College Basketball game was of a poor quality for a portion of the game…..WABs gonna be WABs.
Its called the mute button if you don’t like the commentary just mute it and watch.
Oh, well, you must be the only person who knows how to do it. Wow.
It was funny. I am sorry if a silly tweet offended you
Come on, you know you’ve done your share of whining.
Why in the world would anyone want to listen to mimbling, blockhead broadcasters anyway, and what do you think the Lord made mute buttons for?
Hey guys, it is 2021, you can put the radio broadcast of Missouri on the net and watch the game. If you have DIRECTV, you can easily adjust the timing a\so that the radio broadcast syncs right up with ESPN’s feed.
I’ve tried this. It works for a bit, but the radio feed always lags after a few minutes. I always have to reset the audio feed/re-sync everything every 5 minutes, which is just too much of a pain. Maybe I just have crappy wifi, idk
It was hilarious. Also one of those tweets is mine lol
Schedules seem to be flexible, even a moving target. Nothing against Kentucky, but all their TV exposure based on past years is ridiculous. Even a UK fan might agree that there are some better games that could be shown.
AP poll just came out… There is no way 5-loss Illinois (6) should be ranked above Mizzou (10) since Mizzou has fewer losses, better wins against ranked opponents, AND BEAT THE Illini already this year! Bama and the Vols are better than Illinois.
SEC basketball gets no respect. Payback for football? Could be.
