Sam Houston State has reached the FCS championship game for the first time since 2012.

The Bearkats trailed 24-3, and later 27-10, but rattled off four straight touchdowns in about a five-minute stretch to beat James Madison, 38-35 on Saturday. Sam Houston will meet South Dakota State next Sunday in a championship meeting of the top two seeds in the FCS playoff.

QB Eric Schmid had a passing touchdown and two rushing touchdowns in the victory, while Jequez Ezzard added a punt return for a touchdown and and a receiving touchdown along with 107 receiving yards.

Next week’s championship game will be in Frisco, Texas.

Earlier in the day in South Dakota, Mark Gronowski passed for two touchdowns and caught a 24-yard TD pass from Pierre Strong Jr. as No. 1 seed South Dakota State beat Delaware 33-3 in the other FCS semifinal.

This will be the second time Sam Houston faces a team from the Dakotas. Last week, the Bearkats knocked off North Dakota State, as it was the first time the Bison did not reach at least the semifinals since the 2010 season.
