The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is coming up in Jacksonville, and whenever a big rivalry game comes around it usually gets both fan bases feeling nostalgic. It’s always fun to think about that time your team won big, or the memorable play that made the opposing team look like an idiot.

To help fuel this reminiscing, we discussed some of the most magical moments from the Florida-Georgia rivalry earlier this week. Now we’re back with some of the biggest upsets in this rivalry’s history. There may be some overlap, but we tried to make the games below as different as possible to maximize your nostalgic pleasure.

1966: Georgia upsets No. 7 Florida
Florida entered the game with a 7-0 record and Steve Spurrier as their senior quarterback. Spurrier was on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy and was having a sensational season. However, Georgia’s defense completely dominated Florida, and Spurrier ended up throwing three interceptions against the Bulldogs in the Gators’ 27-10 loss. It may have been this very moment when Spurrier’s legendary grudge against Georgia developed, which he didn’t bother to hide when he came back to Florida as head coach. Under Spurrier, the Gators went 11-1 against the Bulldogs.

1976: Georgia upsets No. 10 Florida
Florida was seeking its first SEC football championship with a 6-1 record, and things looked good as they dashed out to a 27-13 halftime lead. However, Georgia scored early in the third quarter to cut Florida’s lead to a touchdown. Later, the Gators found themselves in a fourth-and-1 situation on their own 29-yard line. Head coach Doug Dickey made the risky and infamous decision to go for it. It failed. Georgia turned the tables on Florida by seizing momentum and scoring three unanswered touchdowns to win 41-27. After the game, Dickey owned up to “some dumb calls,” which made the fourth down try forever known as “fourth and dumb.”

1985: Georgia upsets No. 1 Florida
For the first time in school history, Florida was ranked first in the country. The Gators came into this game undefeated and emotionally high after beating Auburn. One season prior, Florida stunned Georgia with a 27-0 shutout, complete with a 96-yard touchdown pass in the second half. However, a second win over the Bulldogs was not meant to be. Georgia beat Florida 24-3 thanks to their freshman running backs, Keith Henderson and Tim Worley.

2002: Florida upsets No. 4 Georgia
The Bulldogs were riding high heading into the rivalry game. Georgia was 8-0 and one of the top five teams in the country. To make things even better, Spurrier left Florida in 2001 which meant that the Gators were under the first-year coach Ron Zook. Things were not looking great for the Gators, who came into the game with a 5-3 record and no national ranking for the first time in over 10 years. Despite the unevenness of the two teams, the game turned out to be a close one with multiple lead changes and defenses dominating. Florida’s offense was able to etch out the 20-13 upset on a touchdown pass from quarterback Rex Grossman in the fourth quarter, to which the Bulldogs were unable to respond. While Georgia won the SEC championship that season, they were not able to play in the BCS National Championship game. For that, they have Florida to thank.

2012: Georgia upsets No. 2 Florida
While Georgia fans might like remembering this particular upset, it wasn’t a pretty game for either team. The two teams combined for nine turnovers and 24 penalties. Overall, both offenses stagnated in the face of two very strong defenses. Down by eight in the fourth quarter, Florida had finally generated a drive that put them deep in Georgia territory. A touchdown with a two-point conversation was possible. But as tight end Jordan Reed was making a break for the end zone, Georgia’s Jarvis Jones punched the ball out and the Bulldogs recovered the fumble, snuffing out Florida’s dreams of playing for the SEC championship and the national championship.
