Few rivalries have produced more magical moments than Florida vs. Georgia. The game, played in Jacksonville since 1933 (the 1994 and 1995 games were played on the respective campuses while the Gator Bowl underwent renovations), has supplied high drama and important outcomes for both teams.

Here’s a few of the most magical moments:

1975: Appleby to Washington — This is the 40th anniversary of a game won on an 80-yard touchdown punctuated a strong performance from defensive coordinator Erk Russell and the “Junkyard Dawgs” defense. Known in Georgia lore as “Appleby to Washington,” the play was a fake end around pass from WR Richard Appleby to WR Gene Washington late in the fourth quarter. A 10-point underdog entering the game, Georgia beat the No. 11 Gators, 10-7.

1980: Lindsay Scott! Lindsay Scott! — The audio of this play lives on from the voice of renowned Georgia radio play-by-play man Larry Munson, and it overshadowed a stellar performance from RB Herschel Walker, who rushed for 238 yards on 37 carries.
The third down play that sealed a victory came on a 93-yard pass from QB Buck Belue to WR Lindsay Scott, who made a leaping catch, then sprinted down the left sideline with a minute left. Georgia won 26-21, and it propelled the Bulldogs to a No. 1 ranking the next week before they beat Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to win the national championship.

1985: No. 1 Florida goes down — One of the greatest upsets in the rivalry came when the Bulldogs upset No. 1 Florida, 24-3, behind the dual rushing attack of Tim Worley and Keith Henderson, who each had more than 100 yards. It was the first SEC loss for the Gators since 1983 who were ranked No. 1 for the first time in school history. It was reported after the game that Georgia learned in film study that Florida linemen put their hands on the ground differently for running and passing plays. The loss prevented Florida from being national champions because they finished 9-1-1 and ranked No. 5 in the AP Poll.

1995: Half a hundred in Athens — Because of renovations to the stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., the game was played in Athens, Ga., the first time in more than 60 years.
Unranked Georgia hosted No. 3 Florida, and the 52-17 win was historic as an opponent had never scored 50 points on the Bulldogs at Sanford Stadium. “We wanted to score 50 points because it had never been done,” Florida Coach Steve Spurrier reportedly said after the game. “Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do?” Danny Wuerffel threw for 5 TDs in the win.

2002: Grossman, Zook pull upset — A year after Steve Spurrier left for the NFL, Georgia fans were optimistic their fortunes would change from the one win in 12 previous meetings against the Gators. Georgia entered the game 8-0 and No. 4 in the country, while Ron Zook’s Gators came in at 5-3. But QB Rex Grossman overcame two first-half interceptions to throw for 339 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-13 win. Georgia WR Terrence Edwards dropped a would-be touchdown pass in the waning minutes.

2008: Urban Meyer prolongs victory — A year after Georgia flooded the end zone following a Knowshon Moreno touchdown, Florida scored a 49-10 victory that was punctuated by two late timeouts from Gators Coach Urban Meyer. Quarterback Tim Tebow led the Gators to a 35-point second half and finished with three rushing touchdowns and two passing. It was the worst loss in Mark Richt’s career with the Bulldogs, who were ranked No. 1 in the preseason. “It doesn’t get any sweeter than this,” Tebow was said after the game.
