Greg McElroy breaks down most outstanding players amid Heisman debates
Greg McElroy sees the 2023 Heisman Trophy race coming down to 3 quarterbacks and 1 wide receiver.
On his “Always College Football” show, the ESPN analyst said Oregon’s Bo Nix is at the top of the list, with Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., LSU’s Jayden Daniels and Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. not far behind.
McElroy pointed to Nix as the leader. So far this season, the veteran QB has 3,135 passing yards, 29 touchdowns and 2 interceptions for the No. 6 Ducks.
“He’s been really effective,” McElroy said. “He’s leading this offense in a very efficient manner. They’re not making mistakes, and they’re putting him in great position to hit his receivers in catch-and-run situations.”
Despite dominance from Nix, McElroy feels guys like Penix could crash the Heisman Trophy ballot count.
Penix has 3,533 passing yards, 28 TDs and 7 interceptions so far for the No. 5 Huskies. The standout QB surged in the Heisman race after leading Washington to victory over Oregon in thrilling fashion.
“He has his team firmly in the top 5,” McElroy said. “He continues to deliver over and over again.”
Daniels boosted his Heisman campaign with a sensational performance against Florida, throwing for 372 yards and 3 TDs, adding 234 rushing yards and 2 more scores.
“Through 10 games, he’s the most outstanding player in college football,” McElroy said of Daniels.
McElroy mentioned that Daniels leads the nation in total offense by 57 yards per game.
“That’s more than 80 teams out of 130,” McElroy noted.
Lastly, McElroy said voters shouldn’t sleep on Harrison. Through 10 games, Harrison has 59 catches for 1,063 yards and 12 TDs. The junior is the first receiver in Ohio State football history to have two seasons with 1,000 or more receiving yards.
“I know it’s hard for a receiver to win the Heisman, but it’s hard to not give him a look,” McElroy said.
McElroy said Harrison will soon have a big platform against Michigan on Nov. 25.
“If he goes off against Michigan, it’s going to give a pretty dang big boost,” McElroy said. “He was the difference against Penn State.”
All in all, McElroy said all four players deserve Heisman consideration. We’ll see next month who takes home the award.
