Greg McElroy considers history in the Iron Bowl, whether Alabama is distracted
Greg McElroy broke down the Iron Bowl matchup, explaining some history and a few key aspects of Saturday’s game.
McElroy explained that history does not favor Auburn in his matchup. The Tigers have not been known to pull off any big upsets in the matchup.
“History is not on Auburn’s side to pull the upset,” McElroy said on Always College Football. “Unranked Auburn is just 1-27 against ranked Alabama in the AP Poll era. That only win came in 2002. So when Alabama’s ranked and Auburn’s unranked, it has not ended well for the Auburn Tigers.”
Just a few years ago, Auburn came close to pulling off a huge upset over Alabama, which was ranked No. 3 at the time. The Tigers took Alabama into overtime, but the Tide pulled away 24-22. Auburn is looking to have a game like it did in 2021 this year.
McElroy also considered whether Alabama could be distracted. The Tide have a huge game coming up against Georgia, and it might be hard not to look past Auburn.
“Big thing for Bama, are they looking ahead to the Georgia game? Potentially,” McElroy said. “That’s all anyone seems to talk about. They need to focus on the task at hand, because Auburn is dangerous, especially in Jordan-Hare. But Auburn is 1-4 against the spread against team’s with winning records this year. Have no fared well against quality competition in Huge Freeze’s first season.”
