The Heisman Trophy will be awarded tonight to one of four finalists and the current Heisman odds have undergone an seismic shift in recent days. Following an electric finish to the 2020 campaign, Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith stormed past teammate Mac Jones to become the overwhelming favorite. In recent days, Smith vaulted from a -200 favorite all the way up to -1000 as of late Tuesday afternoon, a change that signals he is poised to become the first wide receiver to win the award since Desmond Howard did it in 1991.

With Smith a staggering favorite over Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Florida quarterback Kyle Trask, and Jones, let’s take a look at how to bet on the Heisman tonight.

Current Heisman Odds

Let’s take a brief look at the current Heisman odds and where things stand at DraftKings Sportsbook ahead of tonight’s ceremony.

Note: odds as of 10 a.m. Tuesday morning.

  • DeVonta Smith -1000
  • Mac Jones +550
  • Trevor Lawrence +1000
  • Kyle Trask +5000

The path to the current odds has been a wild one. Alabama quarterback Mac Jones entered the SEC Championship Game as the favorite. He turned in a brilliant five-touchdown performance in helping lead the Crimson Tide to a 52-46 win over Kyle Trask and the Gators. And for his efforts, Jones was passed by his teammate, wide receiver DeVonta Smith. That’s because Smith, who has hauled in 105 receptions for 1,641 yards and 20 touchdowns this season, had 15 catches for 182 yards and two scores in that game.

Following the game, Smith became a -200 moneyline favorite and had surged to -560 by Monday afternoon. By Tuesday morning, the odds surged as high as -1000. As of 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Smith is holding at -1000.

Immediately after the SEC Championship Game, Jones was priced at +200 but moved to +500 in the following days. As of Tuesday morning, Jones was +400 but now sits at +550.

The wild card in this scenario all along has been Trevor Lawrence. After missing a month of action, Lawrence appeared a long shot prior to the ACC Championship Game. His performance in that game sparked a surge in his odds from +900 before the Notre Game game all the way up to +400 after it. However, his odds slowly diminished from +400 to +750 and now sit at +1000.

As for Trask, he moved from +325 to +2000 following the SEC Championship Game and has since seen his odds plummet to +5000. Trask performed admirably head-to-head with Jones, but a loss to Alabama in that game seemingly sealed his fate.

Who Will Win the Heisman?

Who will win the Heisman tonight? This is, quite literally, the money question.

It’s hard to imagine the award is going to anyone other than Smith. Not only is he the overwhelming favorite, but the fact that the market has shifted so dramatically in his favor seems telling. Smith’s odds rocketed from -200 following the SEC Championship Game — the last game played before ballots were finalized — all the way up to -1000 as of early Tuesday morning.

The sense here is that Smith and Jones are the only two possible plays. Lawrence’s odds have ballooned to telling levels, while there’s simply no way voters will give the nod to Trask following the Alabama loss.

Smith is very likely to win, but at such a heavy price, perhaps a lottery ticket on Jones at +550 is the way to go.
