Jon Gruden hasn’t coached a football team since 2008, but that will all change in 2018, as the former ESPN Monday Night Football analyst returns to the sidelines to lead the Oakland Raiders.

He was courted heavily by Tennessee this winter, but that never materialized, and now he’ll return to the NFL as the leader of a team he coached from 1998 to 2001.

Why return at all, and why now? In an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, Gruden said he had trouble developing a hobby outside of football:

“I got tired of sitting in a dark room, watching tape by myself,” Gruden says. “I took rumba-dancing classes; that didn’t last—I wasn’t any good. Bought a boat; I never used it. Live on a golf course; I never play. I’d go to the FFCA early, and next thing I know it’s 10:30 at night. I’m thinking, S—. I’m wasting my time. I got to go compete.”

Being out of football so long will make this year much more difficult for Gruden, as he tries to get caught up on what he’s missed the past decade. However, since he’s been working for ESPN, he’s still at least been around the game.

And, if he wants to commiserate with someone, he can always give Herm Edwards at Arizona State a call.
