Kirby Smart, Dan Mullen open to changing Cocktail Party tradition
Dan Mullen is about to experience his first World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party game in Jacksonville as a head coach. On his weekly radio show, he revealed that he wouldn’t mind coaching against UGA in The Swamp and between the hedges.
That of course has happened before, when the stadium known as the “Gator Bowl” was renovated to become the home of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. Mullen also shared that it’s still the “Gator Bowl” to him.
On his @ESPNGainesville radio show, Dan Mullen, when asked about the Florida-Georgia series, said he could see the two teams playing home and home, then two years in Jacksonville.

More Mullen on @ESPNGainesville, talking about Florida-Georgia in Jacksonville, “It’s in the Gator Bowl. I don’t know what they call it now but it’s still the Gator Bowl to me. It’s in our home state so it’s like a home game for us.’

Not surprisingly, Mullen’s counterpart also expressed support for making the game a home-and-home. While Mullen’s comment suggests he’s open to occasional “home-and-home,” Smart’s comments were less clear as to whether he would want to play any more games in Jacksonville or switch to exclusively home-and-home.
On his radio show, Kirby Smart said he has “mixed feelings at times” on this game in Jacksonville. Issue for him is giving up a home game that would attract top recruits. “It’s something we’ll always look at in the offseason.” https://t.co/9DP4hfLFaz

While the game being played at a neutral location is a long tradition, and one of the best spectacles in the SEC, it does take away an opportunity for both schools to get recruits on campus, as Smart observed.
The Bulldogs and Gators kick off at 3:30pm ET Saturday on CBS.
I vote for home and home or Orlando and Atlanta.
Kirby, Dan, c’mere. Lemme help you understand something. Whether it’s Florida-Georgia or Georgia-Florida, it’s played in Jacksonville. End of story. Now shut up and coach.
It’s played in Jacksonville because both schools agreed to it. That can always change.
DON’T MESS WITH TRADITION!! The World’s Largest Trailer Park Reunion is college football’s biggest freak show. Air brushed tank tops, jorts, mullets…..WOW!!
Moron, are you talking about Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge? Home of the Mullet.
No I am not talking about Tiger Stadium you dumpster diver. Maybe you are getting Baton Rouge confused with Lexington. At U of Kentuxky a mullet is referred to as a “Kentucky Waterfall”.
Keep it as is. This is an EVENT, not just a game. It would lose some of its luster going anywhere else. That luster helps recruiting for both schools every single year, so I don’t see much trade off by having an additional official visit opportunity every other year. The Cocktail Party, Army-Navy, the Red River Shootout – these are events that make CFB special.
Do. Not. Change. It.
So I guess Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry, The Iron Bowl, the egg bowl, etc. have lost their luster since they’re played home and home. Also, it wouldn’t lose any luster nor does it have any impact on recruits where the game is played. Your comment makes zero sense.
I miss Iron Bowls in Birmingham and Egg Bowls in Jackson. But I have to admit, switching to home and home for those classics hasn’t really hurt them. I would hate it for Jacksonville, though. Outside of the TPC, or a rare Jags home playoff game, this is the biggest sporting event of the year there.
