Kirk Herbstreit has been covering college football at the national level for almost 30 years now. The analyst has seen his share of coaching moves, but what happened on Wednesday in college football still caught him by surprise.
First, news broke that the University of North Carolina had agreed to hire Bill Belichick. Then, it came out that West Virginia was close to a deal with Rich Rodriguez. Herbstreit called it a “great” day for college football.
The Belichick news is a complete stunner and will undoubtedly bring new eyes to college football. Belichick is one of the most accomplished coaches in NFL history, best known for his 23-year tenure with the New England Patriots that included 6 Super Bowl wins.
At 72 years old, the North Carolina job will be Belichick’s 1st coaching job of any kind in college football.
As for Rodriguez, the coach will reportedly return to Morgantown to coach the Mountaineers for a 2nd tenure. Rodriguez originally coached the team from 2001-07. The coach compiled a 60-26 record during that time and led the team to 5 bowl games.
The Mountaineers had a head coach opening after firing Neal Brown. The Tar Heels were in the same boat, firing Mack Brown after the regular season concluded. Now, both teams will reportedly have big-name hires that the fanbases can get excited about.
Bryce Lazenby covers college football for Saturday Down South. A Nashville native, his previous stops include FanSided, Dimers, and The Leaf-Chronicle.
