With three teams in the Elite Eight for the first time since 1986, the SEC is looking like a basketball conference (at least during March Madness 2017).

Obviously, making the Elite Eight does not have the same prestige of a Final Four appearance, but it’s quite an impressive feat for Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina. The Gators and Wildcats are somewhat familiar with winning three NCAA tournament games in a row, but in the case of the Gamecocks, Sunday’s clash with UF for a Final Four bid will be the team’s first Elite Eight appearance in school history.

Here is the most recent Elite Eight appearance for SEC teams prior to 2017:

  • Alabama: 2004 – No. 8 seed Crimson Tide lost to No. 1 seed Connecticut 87-71
  • Arkansas: 1995 – No. 2 seed Razorbacks beat No. 4 seed Virginia 68-61
  • Auburn: 1986 – No. 8 seed Tigers lost to No. 2 seed Louisville 84-76
  • Florida: 2014 – No. 1 seed Gators beat No. 11 seed Dayton 62-52
  • Georgia*: 1983 – No. 4 seed Bulldogs beat No. 2 seed North Carolina 82-77
  • Kentucky: 2015 – No. 1 seed Wildcats beat No. 3 seed Notre Dame 68-66
  • LSU: 2006 – No. 4 seed Tigers beat No. 2 seed Texas 70-60
  • Mississippi State: 1996 – No. 5 seed Bulldogs beat No. 2 seed Cincinnati 73-63
  • Tennessee: 2010 – No. 6 seed Volunteers lost to No. 5 seed Michigan State 70-69

Two current SEC schools, Ole Miss and Texas A&M have never made the Elite Eight. Missouri last made it that far in 2009 as a member of the Big 12. Vanderbilt appeared in a regional final in 1965, when the format had not yet expanded to 32 teams (1975). UGA’s regional final appearance was when the tournament featured 52 teams. The tournament first hosted 64 teams in 1985, and expanded to 68 in 2010.
