In a daunting task that is sure to spark plenty of debate, ESPN embarked on a year-long initiative to celebrate the 150-year anniversary of college football.

The challenge was to rank the 150 greatest college football single-season teams of all time. To do it, a panel of 150 media members, athletic administrators and former players and coaches selected these teams from 210 finalists initially identified by ESPN’s Sports & Information group.

Undefeated champions were obviously at the top, but plenty of one-less teams were in the mix, including recent teams in that category.

As ESPN writer Ivan Maisel noted, “You’ll likely find a team you once loved. You’ll definitely find a ranking you don’t love at all.”

Overall, there were 33 SEC teams that made the cut:

8. 1979 Alabama (12-0)
10. 2009 Alabama (14-0)
21. 1992 Alabama (13-0)
