This NBA season saw two teams enjoy unparalleled success in the comfy confines of their arena.

The Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs were nearly unbeatable in their venues, going a combined 79-3. The Spurs went 40-1, and they would’ve gone unbeaten if it wasn’t for the Warriors dealing them their only defeat just last Sunday.

That sort of home cooking made us curious about the longest home winning streaks in sports. Here’s a look at those in the two major college sports as well as the four major pro sports.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Following Miami’s loss to Florida in the 1985 season opener, no one could’ve guessed the Hurricanes would go on to enjoy the longest stretch of dominance for any team in FBS history. Their run of 58 straight wins at the Orange Bowl stretched from Oct. 12, 1985, to Sept. 24, 1994. The first victory came in a 38-0 pasting of Cincinnati in 1985, a season that ended with a loss to Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl as two SEC teams bookended Miami’s campaign with its only two losses. Still, the ‘Canes would win all three of its national titles during that amazing run.

Alabama held the record previously with 57 wins from 1963-82. The Tide won every game in Bryant-Denny Stadium during that span, beginning on Oct. 26, 1963, with a 21-13 win over Houston. The school captured five national titles during that span (as recognized by the school) before eventually losing to Southern Miss by a score of 38-29 on Nov. 13, 1982. Coincidentally, that was the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant’s last home game as coach of the Crimson Tide. Golden Eagles rookie head coach Jim Carmody declared after knocking off No. 17 Alabama: “This is the greatest win in Southern Miss history.”

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

However, another SEC school does still hold the Division I record for most consecutive home wins on the hardwood, and that record may not be challenged for a long time. Kentucky won an incredible 129 straight under its own legendary coach, Adolph Rupp, from Jan. 2, 1943, to Jan. 8, 1955. That’s 12 freaking years. That streak touched the presidential terms of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. During that time, UK won three national titles in 1948, 1949 and 1951. It finally came to an end after a narrow 59-58 loss to then-SEC member Georgia Tech.

NBA

The Warriors may have broken the Chicago Bulls’ hallowed record of 72-10 by finishing 73-9 with the win over the Memphis Grizzlies last night, but they had already moved past the 1995-96 Bulls in another respect. On March 7, Golden State beat the Orlando Magic to extend their regular-season home win streak at Oracle Arena to 45, surpassing those same Michael Jordan-led Bulls’ mark of 44 (their first seven wins in the streak came from the previous season in 1994-95). Steph Curry and Co. stretched the record all the way to 54 before losing to the Boston Celtics on April Fools’ Day. The Spurs also broke the Bulls’ streak with a 48-game run of their own at the AT&T Center. However, that was ended by none other than the Warriors this past Sunday.

NFL

While the Miami Hurricanes boast the longest home winning streak in college football, the Miami Dolphins also used the Orange Bowl to set the longest such streak in the NFL. The Dolphins’ run of 27 spanned from Oct. 17, 1971, to Dec. 15, 1974. Interesting enough, their first and last victories came against the New England Patriots. The run ended in the 1975 season opener against John Madden’s Oakland Raiders, whose team eliminated Miami in the divisional playoffs the previous season. Still, those Don Shula-led teams went to three Super Bowls during that span, winning back-to-back championships in 1972 and 1973, posting the only perfect season in ’72.

MLB

“America’s Pastime” has two teams that share the longest streaks in this department. The 1988 Boston Red Sox and the 1978 Pittsburgh Pirates each won 24 straight at home. The Red Sox run went from June 25, 1988 to Aug. 13, 1988, ending after an 18-6 loss to the Detroit Tigers. The Red Sox went on to lose in the ALCS that season. The Pirates’ string of wins started almost exactly a decade later starting on Aug. 16, 1978 and ending on Sept. 29, 1988. Pittsburgh nearly took the streak into the 1989 regular season, but it lost in the penultimate game of the ’88 regular season, losing 10-8 to the NLCS-bound Philadelphia Phillies. Meanwhile, the Pirates didn’t make the postseason.

NHL

On ice, the record was set much more recently. In the 2011-12 season, the Detroit Red Wings surpassed the mark of 20 straight set by the Boston Bruins in the 1929-30 season and matched by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1976. Detroit did so after beating the Dallas Stars 3-1 on Feb. 14, 2012. The Red Wings padded that record to 23 before falling at the hands of a 4-3 shootout loss to the Vancouver Canucks nine days later. Detroit wouldn’t make it out of the first round of the NHL playoffs that season, losing in five games to the Nashville Predators.
