Central Florida is going back to its roots next week to honor its founding.

In unveiling a uniform combination, UCF used audio from a 1962 speech at Rice University in Houston by President John F. Kennedy, which explained in his “moon speech” why the country was pursuing the space program.

A year later, the University of Central Florida was founded as Florida Technological University, with the mission of supporting the growing United States space program at nearby Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The motto, “Reach for the Stars,” represented the university’s aerospace education in engineering, electronics and other technological professions.

The 2018 UCF Football Space Game uniforms feature constellations patterns, reflective numbers, Canaveral Blue stroke and the return of the Citronaut. The outline of the reflective numbers represents the colors of the sky and ocean off Cape Canaveral, Florida.

In 1968, the school introduced the Citronaut, an astronaut that also happens to be an orange, which served as the school’s first mascot. It’s made appearances on special baseball and soccer uniforms in the past few years, but this is the first time it will ever be worn on the football field.

The uniforms will be worn No. 1 as 7-0 UCF takes on 5-3 Temple at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.
