Eighteen schools have had multiple Heisman Trophy winners, including five from the SEC — Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Texas A&M.

The Heisman winners at eight schools — Florida, Florida State, Army, Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Texas and Wisconsin — have all played the same position, either quarterback or running back.

Here’s a look at the 18 schools with multiple Heisman winners and the positions they played when they won their awards.

Ohio State RBs

Buckeyes players have won the Heisman seven times, tied with Notre Dame and USC for the most from any school. Five of those players have won the award while seeing action at running back, led by Archie Griffin, who won the Heisman in 1974-75 to become the only two-time and back-to-back winner.

The other Buckeyes to win the Heisman out of the backfield are Eddie George (1995), Howard Cassady (1955), Vic Janowicz (1950) and Les Horvath (1944), who brought home the prize after getting snaps at halfback and quarterback.

Playing exclusively at quarterback, Troy Smith won the Heisman in 2006. Smith hasn’t played professionally since being released by the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes two years ago.

Notre Dame QBs

Notre Dame used to be “Quarterback U” — but that was in the 20th Century. Four of the Fighting Irish’s winners have been signal callers — Angelo Bertelli (1943), Johnny Lujack (1947), Paul Hornung (1956) and John Huarte (1964).

Defensive end and tight end Leon Hart took the award in 1949, and halfback Johnny Lattner followed him in 1953. Tim Brown, the last Notre Dame player to win the Heisman, captured the award in 1987 after seeing action as a wide receiver and kick returner/punt returner.

USC RBs and QBs

If Notre Dame used to be “Quarterback U,” then USC has definitely been “Running Back U.” Five of the Trojans’ seven Heisman winners have been running backs: Reggie Bush (2005), Marcus Allen (1981), Charles White (1979), O.J. Simpson (1968) and Mike Garrett (1965).

Matt Leinart (2004) and Carson Palmer (2002) each won the Heisman as USC quarterbacks. Palmer is still starting games for the Arizona Cardinals while Leinart is analyzing them for Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network.

Oklahoma RBs and QBs

Three of the Sooners’ 5 Heisman winners have been running backs: Billy Vessels (1952), Steve Owens (1969) and Billy Sims (1978). QBs Sam Bradford (2008) and Jason White (2003) are Oklahoma’s other two recipients.

Auburn QBs

Two of the Tigers’ three winners have been QBs: Pat Sullivan (1971) and Cam Newton (2010). RB Bo Jackson reeled in college football’s biggest award in 1985.

Florida QBs

All of the Gators’ recipients have been signal-callers: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996) and Tim Tebow (2007). Twenty seasons ago, Spurrier and Wuerffel led Florida to its first national championship.

Florida State QBs

The Seminoles’ three Heisman winners have all been quarterbacks: Charlie Ward (1993), Chris Weinke (2000) and Jameis Winston. Weinke is the Los Angeles Rams’ quarterbacks coach, Ward is the head football coach at Booker T. Washington High School in Pensacola, Fla., and Winston is the starting QB for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Nebraska RBs

Two of the Cornhuskers’ 3 winners got snaps at running back: Johnny Rodgers (1972) — who also saw action at wide receiver — and Mike Rozier (1983). QB Eric Crouch, who won the trophy in 2001, is the owner of a company called Crouch Recreation.

Army RBs

The Black Knights’ three winners have all been running backs: Doc Blanchard (1945), Glenn Davis (1946) and Pete Dawkins (1958).

Alabama RBs

The Crimson Tide’s two Heismans have been won by running backs: Mark Ingram (2009) and Derrick Henry (2015).

Georgia RBs

The Bulldogs’ two recipients have both been running backs: Frank Sinkwich (1942) and Herschel Walker (1982).

Miami QBs

Vinny Testaverde was the Hurricanes’ first Heisman winner in 1986, and fellow quarterback Gino Torretta became their second in 1992. In his 5-year NFL career with five different teams, Torretta threw for one touchdown, one interception and just 41 yards.

Navy QBs

The first Midshipman to win the Heisman was halfback Joe Bellino in 1960. QB Roger Staubach matched that feat 3 years later.

Texas RBs

The Longhorns’ two Heisman winners have both been running backs — Earl Campbell in 1977 and Ricky Williams in 1998.

Wisconsin RBs

In 1954, Alan Ameche — who scored one of the most famous touchdowns in NFL history — became the first Badger to win the Heisman. Fellow running back Ron Dayne brought home the trophy in 1999.
