Christmas Eve has been full of drama involving two of the teams headed to the College Football Playoff — three Clemson players have failed drug tests and three Alabama players have been suspended and did not make the trip to Miami for the Orange Bowl — and now we can add a third team to the mix.

Notre Dame quarterback Brandon Wimbush plans to transfer from the program, according to Brett McMurphy of Watch Stadium. Wimbush began the season as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback but lost his job to Ian Book. Wimbush started 12 games for Notre Dame in 2017.

Wimbush enrolled at Notre Dame after a touted high school career, which included an Elite 11 finals appearance. In his three seasons of play in South Bend, Wimbush threw for 2,606 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Late in the season, with Book sidelined, Wimbush led Notre Dame to a win over Florida State to keep the Irish’s perfect season alive. However, he completed only 12 of 25 passes for 130 yards in that game.

Notre Dame is set to play Clemson in the Cotton Bowl for the right to advance to the national championship game.

No destination for Wimbush has been announced at this time.
