Word is spreading through traditional media and social media that Ohio State fans are planning a rally in support of suspended coach Urban Meyer.

Jackie Orozco of ABC6 reports that Jeff Hamms, known as Tennessee Jeff in OSU fan communities, had the original idea for an on-campus rally to support Meyer.

“A peaceful rally at Ohio State University for Coach Urban Meyer just because I thought, I was thinking there’s been so much negative press with Coach Meyer,” Hamms said on his Facebook page, where he posted a video announcing the rally.

This isn’t the first time college football fans have publicly rallied in support of a coach embattled by scandal. It’s hard not to make comparison between Buckeyes fans’ planned rally and the public displays of support shown by Penn State fans at the end of Joe Paterno’s tenure. Meyer is on administrative leave while OSU, with outside help, determines what he knew and how he handled domestic abuse allegations made against former assistant coach Zach Smith.

Meyer released a statement Friday saying he followed proper protocol at Florida and Ohio State. Many media members opined that the statement did little to help Meyer’s cause and raised more questions about what he and his superiors knew when Smith was accused of domestic violence in 2015 and why Smith remained on staff until last month.
