After initially defending a controversial tweet, Ohio State has decided to delete it.

On Thursday morning, the Ohio State football team’s official Twitter account posted a desktop/mobile background that featured WR Austin Mack putting a finger over his lips. “Silence” (in all capitals) was the featured word on the background, seen below:

Twitter users were quick to criticize Ohio State for the tone deaf move. While OSU is off to a 4-0 start, the Buckeyes graphic department and social media team were certainly that the bigger story of the season was the investigation into how the athletic department and football program handled former wide receivers coach Zach Smith’s history of alleged domestic abuse. Ohio State is set to play its fifth game of the season, but it is only the second game of the season for head coach Urban Meyer, who was suspended for the first three games as the result of the school’s investigation.

Considering the fact that Courtney Smith, ex-wife of Zach Smith, has long claimed that Meyer knew of the domestic abuse long before firing Zach Smith, it seemed especially in poor taste to be using the “Silence” image.

Despite the widespread criticism, Ohio State initially defended the background, pointing out that it was in reference to silencing the Penn State crowd and that a similar message had been used for the game in State College in 2016. That statement was made in response to media inquiries before 1 p.m. ET.

By 4:25 p.m. ET, the graphic was down according to USA Today’s Dan Wolken.
