Did Indianapolis just provide us the final Playoff participant?

No. 1 Clemson is a lock to be in the Playoff coming off a 38-3 win over No. 7 Miami in the ACC title game. No. 3 Oklahoma should be good coming off a 41-17 win over No. 11 TCU in the Big 12 title game — having likely Heisman winner Baker Mayfield certainly doesn’t hurt the Sooners’ Playoff appeal. No. 5 Georgia, now holding an SEC Championship with a 28-7 win over No. 2 Auburn would logically lock up another spot.

Now the big question is who else gets in? Will it be 11-1 Alabama, ranked No. 5 in the Playoff poll last week? Or will it Big Ten Champ Ohio State claim the fourth and final spot?

The Big Ten Championship Game may play a part in answering the question, based on how impressed the Selection Committee was by the participants from the league title game. The undefeated Badgers entered the contest as an underdog to the uber-talented Ohio State team and each program could have made a case to be included in the Playoff field entering the game. Now Ohio State has a Big Ten title to strengthen its case with the committee following the 27-21 win.

Ohio State started the game by slashing Wisconsin’s top-ranked defense — the Badgers entered the game ranked No. 1 in both scoring defense and total defense — for multiple explosive plays. The Buckeyes jumped out to an early 21-7 lead but Wisconsin kept calling and fighting until the offense finally found some success against the Ohio State defense. An early Pick Six kept the Badgers in the game and provided just enough of a spark to keep hope alive.

The game went down to the wire, but the Buckeyes did just enough to hold off the Badgers thanks in part to a gutty performance from quarterback JT Barrett and one last final stand by the Ohio State defense on the game-defining drive, thanks to an interception with just over a minute remaining.

Judging by the history of the Playoff committee, the rankings up to final selections mean little and can be disregarded at any time. Given that fact, you can’t assume rankings from last week will hold up from one week to the next. For example, the No. 5 team (Alabama) may not rank ahead of the No. 8 (Ohio State) when the final poll comes out Sunday.

So which team will it be? That’s the question everyone will be asking up until the final release is revealed Sunday at Noon ET/11 am CT during ESPN’s four-hour Top 25 Selection Show.
