Talk about a bad look for Oklahoma and Lincoln Riley.

While the Sooners are currently recruiting Alabama graduate transfer quarterback Jalen Hurts to finish his college playing career in Norman, the program is at the same time attempting to block its own graduate transfer quarterback from playing at West Virginia next season.

This news was first reported by ESPN’s Jake Trotter and followed up by a report from The Athletic’s Jason Kersey. Kersey is also reporting that Oklahoma is blocking Kendall from any potential transfer to Tennessee, as the Volunteers are on the Sooners’ future non-conference schedule.

It’s unclear if Kendall has any desire to transfer to Knoxville but he was once committed to play for Butch Jones on Rocky Top.

To be clear, Oklahoma cannot block Kendall from transferring to West Virginia but they can block him from playing next season on scholarship for the Mountaineers. That is the case even though Kendall is a graduate transfer and has earned his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma. The SEC has passed a rule allowing graduate transfers to play immediately at other league programs but the Big 12 has no such rule.

The fact that Oklahoma is currently pursuing Hurts to come to Norman and do exactly what they are blocking Kendall from doing, playing on the field next season, is certainly interesting. It will be fascinating to see how the Sooners respond to all the negative publicity that’s sure to come from such a move.

Kendall got his degree early and has two seasons to play college football if he does, in fact, leave Oklahoma.
