Ole Miss and Mississippi State have played 114 times. In that span, they’ve only been both ranked only 6 times on the day of the Egg Bowl, and the Rebels hold a 3-2-1 edge in those games.

The Rebels have dominated in games in which they were ranked and the Bulldogs weren’t, going 16-3-1.

State hasn’t been ranked as often, but when it has been ranked and Ole Miss hasn’t, the Bulldogs are 6-5.

There have been several games, however, when the outcomes have been inconsistent with the rankings – and the teams’ respective records. Here are the 10 biggest upsets in the history of the Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State rivalry:

10. Mississippi State 6, No. 14 Ole Miss 0 (1941)

The Bulldogs must have been one of the better unranked teams in the country, coming into the game with a 6-1 record, their only loss to No. 10 Duquesne (16-0). The Rebels had the same record – but a significant ranking – entering their season finale in Oxford.

9. No. 24 Ole Miss 17, No. 16 Mississippi State 10 (1992)

Both teams were bowl bound when they met in the regular-season finale 2 days after Thanksgiving in Oxford. The game seemed to have a carryover effect because Ole Miss went on to beat Air Force in the Liberty Bowl, while State fell to North Carolina in the Peach Bowl.

8. Ole Miss 41, No. 25 Mississippi State 24 (2012)

The Bulldogs were 8-3 and 4-3 in the SEC entering the Thanksgiving night game, and the Rebels managed to get to .500 for the season but wound up just 3-5 in the SEC even after the upset.

State coach Dan Mullen said after his team won the previous season’s meeting 31-3, ending Houston Nutt’s tenure in Oxford, that they would never lose to Ole Miss again. But Bo Wallace threw 5 touchdown passes, 3 to Donte Moncrief, to make Ole Miss bowl eligible. The Rebels went on to defeat Pitt in the BBVA Compass Bowl while State lost to Northwestern in the Gator Bowl.

7. Ole Miss 45, No. 23 Mississippi State 30 (2000)

The Bulldogs were still ranked, though they came in to the game 5 days after a 17-10 home loss to Arkansas. The Rebels were coming off consecutive double-digit losses to LSU and Georgia. State’s Dontae Walker and Ole Miss’ Deuce McAllister both had 121 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns, but McAllister topped Walker by throwing a touchdown pass.

6. Ole Miss 15, No. 22 Mississippi State 14 (1997)

The Rebels were 6-4 going in and the Bulldogs were 7-3, but were coming off a 17-7 loss at Arkansas. State wasn’t able to bounce back while Ole Miss continued on into the postseason, scoring a victory over Marshall in the Music City Bowl.

5. Ole Miss 7, No. 20 Mississippi State 6 (1945)

State came in with a 6-1 record, with wins in the previous two weeks over LSU (27-20) in Baton Rouge and Northwestern State (54-0) in Starkville. The Bulldogs’ only loss was at Alabama (55-13) before they ran into the Rebels, who had lost 3 straight (including shutouts against Arkansas and Tennessee) before pulling the narrow upset.

4. Mississippi State 41, No. 20 Ole Miss (27 (2009)

The Rebels had been ranked as high as No. 4 and entered the game with an 8-3 record, including a 3-game winning streak highlighted by a 42-17 victory over Tennessee. The Bulldogs came into their season finale with a 4-7 record, the most recent losses being 42-21 at Arkansas and a 31-3 whipping against Alabama. Both teams entered the postseason on a positive note, as Ole Miss beat Oklahoma State in the Cotton Bowl.

3. Ole Miss 31, No. 16 Mississippi State 28 (2017)

The Bulldogs rolled into the game with an 8-3 record, having won 5 of 6 with the loss a slim 7-pointer to No. 2 Alabama. But they were no match for the fired-up Rebels in a game marred by 7 turnovers, 22 penalties, a series of trash-talking encounters and altercations, as well as an injury to State QB Nick Fitzgerald. Ole Miss took a 24-6 lead into the fourth quarter and held off a Bulldogs comeback as Jordan Ta’amu finished with 2 touchdown passes and Jordan Wilkins added 2 touchdown runs.

2. No. 18 Ole Miss 31, No. 4 Mississippi State 17 (2014)

One of the best Bulldogs teams ever was ranked No. 1 for 4 weeks and entered this game at No. 4 with a 10-1 record. The Rebels were also pretty strong, winning their first 7 games to climb as high as No. 3, but they had lost of 3 of 4 entering the Egg Bowl, including a 30-0 loss at Arkansas the week before.

1. Mississippi State 19, No. 10 Ole Miss 14 (1970)

The Rebels had been ranked as high as No. 4 earlier in the season and entered the game with a 7-1 record. The Bulldogs entered on a 3-game losing streak, having lost to Alabama, Auburn and LSU by a combined score of 129-13.
