Paul Finebaum names SEC school from outside the top 12 that could end up making CFP
Paul Finebaum appeared on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ on Wednesday morning to break down the initial CFP rankings reveal.
Finebaum was asked by Mike Greenberg to name a team from outside the committee’s top 12 that could end up reaching the College Football Playoff when all the dust settles.
Finebaum focused his answer on Ole Miss. Lane Kiffin’s team clocked in at No. 16 in the initial CFP rankings, behind other 2-loss SEC programs like Alabama, Texas A&M and LSU. However, Finebaum argued that they can makeup for their previous defeats with a win over No. 3 Georgia this weekend.
“Ole Miss is a team to keep your eye on,” Finebaum said. “And really, this will be decided on Saturday. But should Ole Miss beat Georgia, they’re at home and they’re a very good team that nobody is talking about, they will have a straight shot at the CFP. They have to beat Georgia, though, which is a major mountain to climb.”
These teams didn’t play often under the SEC’s old scheduling model, but the Bulldogs have won 11 of the last 12 games in this series. The lone Ole Miss victory over that span came back in 2016 — the first year of the Kirby Smart era in Athens.
