Paul Finebaum ponders necessity of expanding Playoff beyond 4 teams

Paul Finebaum like people all across the country watched the first round of the College Football Playoff. Many fans are frustrated because every game was decided by 10 points or more. With that many non-competitive games, fans are already starting to wonder if the CFP should have expanded to 12 teams.
While Finebaum knows it wasn’t the best weekend for the sport, he said on the McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning show that the NFL games played a role in the broadcast numbers for the games.
“I think the audiences will be significantly better for the Friday night and Saturday night game, I think that’s easy to figure out,” Finebaum said. “The noon and 4 o’clock game on Saturday were going to be overwhelmed by the NFL, no matter who was playing… it’s just the nature of it.”
A big issue among fans has been the fact that the 2 most-debated teams to get in were Indiana and SMU, and both of those teams were dominated in their matchups. People were clamoring for Alabama, Ole Miss and South Carolina to be in the CFP, but Finebaum said that conversation is over.
“For all the teeth-gnashing that has happened from Lane Kiffin on down on Saturday afternoon, some of that was expected, it won’t really matter,” Finebaum said. “And if you look back at what the committee did, we can quibble. But for every quibble there is a response to say could Alabama and South Carolina and Miami and Ole Miss have done differently? We’ve already had that debate. I’ve even heard people say well how did Tennessee get in there? Well, Tennessee actually had a really good season, they just picked the biggest moment to have the most embarrassing performance.”
There will be much more to talk about as the CFP moves on to the quarterfinal matchups.
