Paul Finebaum wasn’t afraid to poke holes in his own comments from a day earlier regarding the Alabama-Georgia thriller in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night.

On Sunday morning, in the afterglow of the 2024 Game of the Year (so far, at least) between the SEC behemoths, the ESPN college football analyst went on SportsCenter and said boldly that it was the best SEC game he had seen in 40 years.

They were big, bold words from a college football historian, but Finebaum now admits that he might’ve gotten swept up in the moment a little bit. On Monday morning during an appearance on the “McElroy & Cubelic in the Morning” show, Finebaum walked back his grandiose comments just a little bit.

“I think I probably should have said one of (the best SEC games). But you know how it is, you get caught up in the moment,” said Finebaum. “I was just mesmerized by the swings of emotion. But listen, there have been more consequential games.

“As I said that, I started remembering the kick-6 game and so many others where literally a 3-peat was on the line so, no, I probably overshot the runway by a minute. But I think in the moment, it just felt like one of those games. … The scenes, the atmosphere and the swings in the game were just breathtaking as everyone knows.”
