Week 5 is over, and we’ve seen some quarterback controversies and even changes thus far in 2015. We’ve seen two true freshmen start in the same game, redshirt freshmen dominate and veterans struggle. Weather was an issue in some games, for some quarterbacks last week in a slate of games in which Florida might have found its next star.

Speaking of Will Grier …

1. Was that a breakthrough or a freshman QB getting hot? As a sign of development, maturity, being able to handle success, what do you want to see out of him Saturday at Missouri?

Answer: It’s too early to tell, but from what I saw and have seen thus far, he has the tools to be a heck of a quarterback in this conference. This past weekend against Ole Miss he really showed me the ability to read defenses pre-snap. His arm strength was nice as well. Throwing a ball 45 yards off your back foot, and accurately, is no easy task. His pre-snap reads have improved every week and you can see his confidence increasing. I think he will continue to play at a high level, but now that defenses are aware of him, expect them to start game-planning a little more for him.

2. South Carolina remains without its starter, and Lorenzo Nunez obviously struggled. How will Steve Spurrier protect him in the game plan, or will he against LSU?

A: Nunez is a freshman and it clearly showed last week in Missouri. He stared down receivers, threw jump balls, and just didn’t read coverages very well. That takes time, especially with coach Spurrier’s offense. I expect coach Spurrier and the staff to have a Nunez run a little more and get the ball out of his hand with quicker reads and routes. LSU’s defense is one of the fastest in the country, but it hasn’t exactly been stellar this season. Playing at home will be a huge benefit for Nunez and the offense, but they cannot turn the ball over and give Leonard Fournette extra possessions. To all Gamecocks fans, just breathe and relax: Nunez will be a good one.

3. There was a lot of spotty play last week. Is there any QB in danger of losing his job?

A: We’ve already seen a few quarterbacks replaced in the past few weeks. Jeremy Johnson at Auburn, Perry Orth at South Carolina, Maty Mauk at Missouri and Greyson Lambert from time to time at Georgia. I doubt Mauk plays again. I recently wrote that I’d be surprised if Mauk gets benched, but he has struggled and Lock has been on point. I don’t think Brice Ramsey replaces Lambert after this past weekend, but if Lambert struggles again it could happen. Fans are very impatient, with players, coaches, athletic directors, etc. Brandon Harris is another guy that could be benched soon. The Tigers can’t just hand the ball off to Leonard every single down, can they?

4. You have unique perspective on this, but do QBs play with one eye on their head coach? How do you handle that, if you’re a Greyson Lambert?

A: Absolutely. When you’re not playing very well and the fans are all about instant gratification, the coach has to make some sort of change. As a quarterback, looking over your shoulder is the worst thing you can do. You have to continue to try to make plays down the field and lead your team. When you’re looking over your shoulder, you play nervous and sketchy. I was, and always will be, a gun slinger, so I refused to look over my shoulder. My teammates always had my back and it was reciprocated. Lambert was one of the hottest quarterbacks in the SEC leading into the ‘Bama game, so I don’t expect him to be benched going into the Tennessee game Saturday. He just needs to rebound and get back to the basics. He ran into a pissed off Crimson Tide, and that’s never a good thing.

5 . Georgia’s quarterback situation obviously is an issue after the ‘Bama game, or was it more an issue about the weather?

A: I would have to say it was a weather issue. Both Lambert and Ramsey struggled. I mean Brice came in and threw two picks, including one returned for a touchdown. Granted, the wide receiver didn’t help him on that ball, but still. Throwing a wet ball is not easy, as I explained in the video, and some guys are better at it than others. I fully expect coach Mark Richt to stay with Lambert. As I previously stated, Greyson was one of the hottest quarterbacks in the conference heading into that game. He just struggled and sometimes, s#!+ happens. This is Lambert’s team for the 2015 season.
