A little more than a year ago, Greg Schiano was reportedly returning to the head coaching ranks.

Now he’s out of a job altogether.

Ohio State has removed Schiano from his post as defensive coordinator, according to a Monday report from 247Sports.com’s Buckeyes website. Schiano spent three years in Columbus, the final one after reportedly landing the Tennessee job before public disapproval prompted the Volunteers to back out of the deal.

Ohio State tied for 50th nationally in scoring defense, surrendering 25.5 points per game despite being among the most talented teams in the country. Schiano’s defenses have produced one baffling performance in each of the last two seasons — giving up 55 points to Iowa and 49 to Purdue, respectively — leading to losses that kept the Buckeyes out of the College Football Playoff.

The former head coach for both Rutgers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers likely won’t be out of a job for long. Schiano reportedly flirted with the New England Patriots last year, too, so he’ll probably have a market in both the college and pro ranks.

247Sports also reported that Michigan defensive line coach Greg Mattison is set to replace Schiano at Ohio State.
