SEC Top Position Groups: Week 10

Here’s a look at the SEC’s top position groups from Week 10:

QUARTERBACKS  — Tennessee: Josh Dobbs has elevated the Tennessee offense to another level since taking over as the Vols’ quarterback in a Week 9 loss to Alabama, and he looked even better in his first start of the season in Week 10. He threw for 300 yards, ran for 166 yards and accounted for five total touchdowns in Tennessee’s win over South Carolina on Saturday night, leading the offense to its highest scoring output against an FBS foe this season (Tennessee also scored 45 points against FCS opponent Chattanooga).

RUNNING BACKS — Florida: Matt Jones and Kelvin Taylor ran over, around and through the Georgia defense Saturday afternoon, combining for 389 yards and four touchdowns on 50 total carries in a 38-20 victory. The Bulldogs never found an answer for Florida’s tailback tandem, and as a result Jones and Taylor controlled the tone of the game with their stout rushing attack. Florida won the time of possession battle and scored on six of its eight possessions in the final three quarters to record the most surprising win of the weekend in Jacksonville.

WIDE RECEIVERS — Ole Miss: The Rebels may have lost to Auburn in a thrilling SEC West elimination showdown, but their wideouts put forth a winning performance against a strong Tigers secondary. Laquon Treadwell led Ole Miss with 10 catches for 103 yards and a touchdown before suffering a season-ending ankle injury, and Evan Engram, Vince Sanders and Cody Core combined to catch 18 more passes for 253 yards and another touchdown in the loss.

OFFENSIVE LINE — Florida: The Gators offensive line was in control from start to finish against Georgia, allowing Jones and Taylor to put up monster numbers in their victory on Saturday. Florida also kept quarterback Treon Harris upright all game in his first career start, allowing zero sacks and just two quarterback hurries to the UGA defense. Florida only attempted six passes, which does contribute to Georgia’s woeful pass rushing numbers, but the Gators’ lack of balance on offense makes the offensive line’s dominance in the run game even more impressive.

DEFENSIVE LINE — Missouri: Shane Ray added two more sacks to his SEC-leading total, and now holds the school record for sacks in a season with 12 in just nine games. The rest of his teammates along the defensive line also played well in a win over Kentucky, limiting the Cats to just 258 yards of total offense for the game and just 100 yards on the ground as a team. The Tigers had three sacks and nine tackles for loss, and even though the defensive line did not make every one of those plays, their control at the line of scrimmage made those plays possible.

LINEBACKERS — Mississippi State: The Bulldogs linebackers helped limit a potent Arkansas rushing attack to fewer than 170 yards for just the fourth time in nine games this season, and as a result held the Hogs to their lowest scoring output of the year at just 10 points. Mississippi State’s linebackers, including Benardrick McKinney, Beniquez Brown and Richie Brown lacked dynamic plays, but consistently quelled the Razorbacks offense in a tight, low-scoring affair in Starkville. Mississippi State won despite scoring fewer points than its scored all year, thanks in large part to its fantastic linebackers.

DEFENSIVE BACKS — Missouri: One week after throwing for 390 yards against No. 1 Mississippi State, Kentucky’s Patrick Towles had one of his worst outings of the year against a fiery Missouri secondary on Saturday. The Tigers limited Towles to a 51 percent completion rate and just 158 yards through the air, and they intercepted him for the first time since Kentucky’s Week 5 win over Vanderbilt in September. Kentucky never found any rhythm on offense, and Mizzou’s talented secondary had no trouble taking advantage.
