Every Wednesday, we rank the SEC and Big 12 teams in one power poll. The order of the SEC teams is based on the Week 5 SDS SEC Power Poll.

Texas jettisoned Charlie Weis this week with a 23-0 sendoff, ensuring the Jayhawks are not above .500 at the time of his departure.

Other than that, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Kansas State and TCU cruised to comfortable wins. Due to the Jayhawks’ loss to Auburn earlier this year, though, the Big 12’s nationally-relevant teams are limited to Oklahoma and Baylor. If either of those teams lose ahead of their Nov. 8 showdown, the conference takes a huge credibility hit nationally.

The SEC has Alabama and Auburn at the top, but five unbeatens in the SEC West entering October.

THE HEAVY FAVORITES

There’s an excellent chance that two of these three teams will make the inaugural College Football Playoff. Oklahoma has a huge test at TCU this Saturday — probably the second-toughest game the Sooners will play all year — but all eyes in the SEC will be on Alabama-Ole Miss in Oxford, Ala. Both of those teams will solidify their place in the top of the national polls with wins.

UNBEATEN AND COULD STICK

The ACC and Pac-12 have three undefeated teams each. The SEC West has five. This is the strength of the SEC right here, and the reason the conference is the best in the country. But five will dwindle to three after this weekend, as Texas A&M and Mississippi State square off in perhaps the most intriguing game in the country. Auburn gets a revenge game against LSU and will ensure three remaining unbeatens in the SEC with a win.

NO SHAME IN THAT ONE LOSS

Well, except for maybe Georgia. The other three teams have lost to unbeaten ranked opponents. In any case, Kansas State will have a chance to play national spoiler later this season, while Georgia and LSU need a big two weeks to stay in the division race in the SEC.

MAKE THE BIG BOYS NERVOUS

The Horned Frogs have a chance to get a standing ovation from the SEC, Big Ten and other conferences this weekend with a huge home game against OU. Missouri, despite losing to Indiana, can seize control of the SEC East this month. West Virginia and Arkansas already have scared Top 10 teams.

MIRED IN MEDIOCRITY

South Carolina’s schedule gets easier from here, although the Gamecocks still must face Auburn. Still, all of these teams easily could fall off the table and become in danger of at least playing .500 football. More likely there are a bunch of seven-win teams in this group.

NOT QUITE BAD ENOUGH TO COVER YOUR EYES

These teams make enough plays to give fans a bit of entertainment and hope. Iowa State even knocked off Iowa. The Hawkeyes probably would be in the Top 25 right now if not for that loss. Kentucky played Florida tough, and Texas Tech’s passing game is feisty enough to generate some cheers. But all of that is lipstick on the pig. These teams are bad in 2014.

WINNING A CONFERENCE GAME WOULD BE SHOCKING

There’s really not much more to say. There are plenty of SEC and Big 12 fan bases getting smiles out of playing these teams right now.
