Starstruck for Coach Prime? Jackson State players share early impressions of Deion Sanders

Jackson State made one of the biggest splashes in college football last fall when it hired Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders as its coach.
Sanders previously was a high school assistant coach as offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian School in Texas. But even after he was hired, the move didn’t completely set in for some of the Jackson State players, and they shared those thoughts with Nick Niehaus of WAPT.
“You’re talking about one of the best football players ever,” one player said. “Just being able to have a conversation with him, pick his brain on what he thinks, and for him to be your coach, I know plenty of people probably don’t understand it, but it’s really a dream come true. I’m going to be starstruck at first, but then you gotta get right, it’s a business, you know what I’m saying. You got to focus in.”
Added another player, “It’s funny, because it didn’t set in to me until we got on our first Zoom call with him, I just look, OK, so he’s really on the phone right now. That was like a big realization for me. Until that moment, it didn’t set in with me. It’s funny, because it set in with my parents before it set in with me.”
Sanders has already landed some blue chip recruits, and convinced several former SEC players to transfer to his program. So it’ll definitely be one to watch entering the 2021 season.
Even the Jackson State football players are a little starstruck to have Deion Sanders as their head coach.
