With a show-stopping 228-yard explosion against 18th-ranked Auburn on Saturday, LSU sophomore running back Leonard Fournette has ascended as the front-runner for the Heisman, according to Fox Sports analyst Bruce Feldman.
Fournette’s signature game, a career-best, was shown in the coveted 3:30 p.m. EST slot on CBS for all the world to see, and they certainly did judging by the social media reaction following the monster effort.
Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett posted another terrific performance during the Aggies’ win over Nevada, managing 3.5 sacks, pushing his season total to an SEC-leading 5.5.
Georgia running back Nick Chubb, one of the preseason favorites, managed his 11th straight 100-yard game — the second-longest active streak in college football behind Toledo’s Kareem Hunt (12) — during the dismantling of South Carolina.
Georgia’s 52 points were most ever scored on a Steve Spurrier-coached team for the Bulldogs.
Feldman’s Heisman Top 5 includes …
1) Leonard Fournette, LSU, RB
He’s my clear No. 1. Fournette ran wild over Auburn, making Gus Malzahn’s team pay for its midweek trash talk. The big speedster tricked Auburn for 228 yards. On the season in two games: 47 carries for 387 yards and six TDs — and lots and lots of jaw-dropping highlights.
2) Myles Garrett, Texas A&M, DE
Had 3.5 sacks and 4 TFLs in a win over Nevada. Garrett regularly gets double-teamed and sometimes triple-teamed, but still makes plays. He’s third on the Aggies in tackles with 16, to go with 6.5 TFLs, 5.5 sacks, 5 QB hurries and one forced fumble.
3) Nick Chubb, Georgia, RB
The Dawgs rolled over a mediocre South Carolina team. Chubb now has 468 yards in three games and is averaging more than eight yards a carry.
Notre Dame receiver Will Fuller and Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook rounded out the list.
