When the calendar page flips from July to August, fall camp will get underway. Soon, teams will be finalizing their depth chart and finding difference-makers on the roster.

The Coaches Top 25 Poll and the AP Poll will also be released in early August.

ESPN recently updated its Football Power Index rankings ahead of August, and six SEC teams fell within the top 19. As you’ll notice, it’s the big three teams from both divisions that made the cut. Alabama, Auburn and LSU made it from the West, while Florida, Georgia and Tennessee made it from the East.

ESPN explains its FPI as follows:

The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily.
