The Florida Gators were off this weekend, but the rest of the SEC East competed on the field against each other. Georgia, Missouri and Kentucky came away with the wins, but it seems like this division keeps getting more and more up for grabs every week.

Here’s what we learned about every SEC East team after Week 5.

Florida Gators
Week 5 result: Bye week
What we learned: The Gators didn’t play a game, but by virtue of not playing, they came away looking like one of the better teams in the East. No one in the division had looked ready to take control of the East with their performances this weekend, so despite a rough outing against Alabama last week, it appears the Gators are right in the mix for the SEC East title.

Georgia Bulldogs
Week 5 result: Defeated Tennessee, 35-32
What we learned: It was another victory for the Bulldogs, but ugly wouldn’t even begin to describe Georgia’s win. Running back Todd Gurley continued to do Todd Gurley things, rushing for 200-plus yards for the first time in his career. But it was offensive coordinator Mike Bobo that took center stage with his questionable play-calling. He seemed determined to prove that Hutson Mason could pass the ball and it backfired with Mason completing 16-of-25 passes for 147 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The Georgia defense had a rough outing, too, allowing 401 total yards. They probably would have been in even deeper of a hole if Tennessee quarterback Justin Worley hadn’t sat out for a good portion of the second half because of an injury. It appears this UGA defense isn’t as airtight as everyone once though after the earlier games of the season and they certainly didn’t prove they’re much better than any of the other SEC East contenders.

Kentucky Wildcats
Week 5 result: Defeated Vanderbilt, 17-7
What we learned: It wasn’t a pretty game from both teams in Lexington this weekend, but the important thing for Kentucky is that they snapped a conference worst 17-game SEC losing streak. The offense wasn’t as sharp as we’ve seen this season, but once again Mark Stoops’ defense held tough, limiting Vanderbilt to just seven points while picking off three passes. Kentucky probably isn’t ready to compete for the SEC East title this season, but with how wide open the division is right now, anything can happen. It’s clear, however, that Kentucky is no longer the pushover they once were. An exciting night-game atmosphere awaits the Wildcats next weekend as South Carolina comes into town in another SEC showdown.

Missouri Tigers
Week 5 result: Defeated South Carolina, 21-20
What we learned: Like other SEC East teams, Missouri’s performance Saturday wasn’t pretty, but it was good enough to beat the Gamecocks on the road. For the most part, the Tigers’ offense sputtered all game, scoring just seven points in the game’s first 53 minutes. However, quarterback Maty Mauk and running backs Russell Hansbrough and Marcus Murphy sparked 14 unanswered points in the remaining moments of the fourth quarter to take the lead with just over a minute left. Mauk certainly hasn’t been as impressive in recent weeks and if he keeps struggling, it’s hard to see the Tigers winning enough conference games to compete in the SEC East. Still, Missouri gets the win and is the only SEC East team without a conference loss. The fate of their season will rest with how Mauk performs in the upcoming weeks.

South Carolina Gamecocks
Week 5 result: Lost to Missouri, 21-20
What we learned: In what could only be described as a disappointing loss, South Carolina’s defense appeared to be turning a corner until giving up 14 points in the final minutes of the game to lose 21-20. The loss to Missouri gives the Gamecocks two conference losses and now South Carolina no longer controls their fate in the SEC East title race. Despite a huge win against a ranked Georgia team a few weeks ago, it certainly looks like the Gamecocks were severely overrated as a top-10 team to begin the season. They can only hope that the SEC East continues to struggle and multiple losses from Missouri and Georgia get them back into contention.

Tennessee Volunteers
Week 5 result: Lost to Georgia, 35-32
What we learned: Ironically enough, a team that lost over the weekend may have been the SEC East’s most impressive squad in Week 5. The Vols shocked Georgia early, jumping out to a 10-point lead. Truth be told, barring an injury to Justin Worley, the Vols probably would have been able to pull of the upset considering Worley was throwing all over a depleted Georgia secondary. Young, emerging players like Jalen Hurd, Josh Malone and Ethan Wolf certainly make this one of the most exciting Tennessee teams in recent years. However, the Vols’ are thin along the line of scrimmage (12 sacks allowed – last in SEC), which will make it tough for them to have sustained success this season. There’s no question though that Tennessee is well on their way back to relevancy with Butch Jones at the helm.

Vanderbilt Commodores
Week 5 result: Lost to Kentucky, 17-7
What we learned: Vanderbilt racks up another loss on the season and failed to score an offensive touchdown in their 17-7 loss to Kentucky. Simply put, no matter how much head coach Derek Mason attempts to motivate his beleaguered team, the Commodores won’t have much success if they can’t get anything going on offense. After another touchdown by Darrius Sims via a pick-six, I would just attempt to get the ball in his hands as much as possible since he seems to be the only Vanderbilt player who can find the end zone.
