Everyone said the same thing when Urban Meyer retired from Ohio State — that he would resurface in college football as a head coach, and it will likely be at USC.

Although Meyer has said that he believes he’s done coaching, former USC star Reggie Bush ignited some talk this week when he told the Los Angeles Times that should USC struggle again under Clay Helton, he would recruit Meyer to the Trojans.

USA Today asked OSU AD Gene Smith whether he thinks Meyer will return to coaching, and while he didn’t rule it out, Smith thinks Meyer is content in his current role.

“I have a hard time believing that,” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith told USA Today – but he adds: “Is it possible? You can never say never. He’s still young.

“Right now he has no headaches. None. Zip,” Smith said. “I quite don’t know what that means (because) I don’t have it. None of us are dealing with that. So my assumption is he’s reaching a comfort level.”

The three-time national champion Meyer — two at Florida and one at Ohio State — has yet to completely kill the rumors, and until he does, there will always be talk, especially at a premier program like USC.

Meyer has proven in the past he can go really hard for a few years, recruiting elite talent and winning championships, but when the burn factor starts to set in, he has to do something else (and quickly). Combine that with some health issues, and it would be tough to see Meyer return to the sidelines again.
