Tyrese Ross arrived at South Carolina with a strong reputation as a physical defender who played both safety positions in 3 seasons at Washington State.
In the relatively short time he’s been around Gamecocks defensive coordinator Clayton White, he has been impressive.
“Tyrese Ross is a “1985 safety.” He’s like Steve Atwater,” White told reporters, per David Cloninger. “He’ll come down and pop you, and that can be hit and miss, but he’s had the two biggest hits the past 2 practices.”
When Ross arrives on the play, “you’re going to hear some pads pop,” White added, then said, “We love what he brings to the defensive backfield.”
Last season, Ross appeared in 1 game last season of the COVID-shortened four-game schedule and made 2 tackles against No. 11 Oregon. In 2019, he appeared in all 13 games, made 33 tackles with one for a loss, forced a fumble, and led the team with 6 special teams tackles.
