Jake Bentley figures to have a bright future as South Carolina’s starting quarterback, but the Gamecocks received some great news regarding the future of the position on Sunday.

Dakereon Joyner, the nation’s No. 10-rated dual-threat quarterback, announced his commitment to South Carolina Sunday afternoon giving the Gamecocks a prospect they can build their 2018 class around. It appears Joyner is ready to help make that happen.

“To win a national championship, I need guys around me,” Joyner told thestate.com after his announcement.

“One, I’m going to get Xavier Thomas to flip. I’m going to try to get him, Stephon Wynn, just everybody on board.”

Thomas is the top defensive end prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Ranking, and the No. 2 player overall. He is currently committed to Clemson, and it would be a massive victory for South Carolina if Joyner managed to change his mind. Wynn will be Thomas’ teammate at IMG Academy this fall, but he is another highly-touted defensive end and one of the top players from the state of South Carolina.

Few positions are able to rally a recruiting class like a quarterback. Often a team’s leader on and off the field, quarterbacks are a vital part of any championship team. In Joyner, South Carolina is hoping it found a winner. Now, it needs to help surround him with talent.

As the Gamecocks’ newest commit told The State, “Everybody wants to play with a good quarterback. Hopefully, they jump on board.”
