South Carolina receiver/quarterback Dakereon Joyner could have transferred away from Columbus ahead of last season.

The fifth-year senior, formerly quarterback but used at receiver in 2021, detailed his decision to stay under then-1st year head coach Shane Beamer for his senior season.

“I definitely considered it, just having the opportunity to go play the quarterback position again, you know what I saying, but my loyalty lies with the University of South Carolina,” Joyner told 247Sports at SEC Media Days. “They mean everything to me. I love it here and I’m very appreciative of the fans and all the coaches and things like that.”

Joyner’s rise to the top of Beamer’s offense was unexpected. He played well in the Gamecocks’ bowl win over North Carolina, putting up 224 yards and a 69-yard touchdown pass on his first throw of the game.

This season, he’s ready for more of the unexpected.

“I’ll be playing both positions (quarterback and wide receiver),” Joyner said. “I told myself I’ve got to be available and accept any role I’m asked to play.”
