Spencer Rattler was the preseason favorite to win the Heisman Trophy last season, but now he’s at a new program, and questions abound about him transferring the expectations he had at Oklahoma to the Gamecocks.

Rattler was a topic of “College Football Live” as ESPN analysts Matt Stinchcomb and Andre Ware each took turns considering the issue with host Wendi Nix. Can Rattler return to Heisman form?

“I think so, Wendi, the question is does he have enough talent around him to elevate the South Carolina program,” Ware said, and added that expectations and pressure go together. “Sometimes I think a lot of it is self-inflicted by Spencer Rattler.”

Stinchcomb brought up the possibility of the Gamecocks knocking off Georgia, but said there’s a clear chance that the Gamecocks are 2-2 in their first 4 games.

“And then of course you’ve got Arkansas, which is considered one of the top teams out of the West division,” he said. “That’s not an easy slate to open up the season with, and you heard Coach Beamer, well, these other guys, they’ve gotta step up, they’ve gotta step up big relative to what we saw from South Carolina last year.”

Stinchcomb suggested Rattler should lay low to start the season, and temper expectations.
