Raekwon McMillan was the top inside linebacker prospect for the 2014 national recruiting class, but apparently former Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier was oblivious of that fact.

The Ohio State captain revealed that during Big Ten Media Days Tuesday that during a visit to South Carolina, Spurrier asked him what his name was and proceeded to ignore him, which was repeated by several other Gamecocks coaches before deciding to cut his trip short.

“I just got an offer from Alabama and was the No. 1 linebacker in the nation,” McMillan said. So I go visit South Carolina. I walk up to Coach Spurrier and say, ‘what’s up coach, how you doing?’ He said, what’s your name again?’ I was like, ‘woah, he doesn’t even know my name.’ He said, ‘are you that kid from Texas’ and I said ‘nah,’ so he just walked away. Didn’t even ask me my name or anything like that. After he walke away I went to another coach, same thing happened. They didn’t even know I was on campus, so I just left.”

McMillan claimed former running backs coach Everette Sands was the only staff member who knew he was supposed to be on campus.

“That was weird,” McMillan said of the incident. “I was supposed to stay with Jadeveon Clowney, but I ended up not staying at all.”

Many have criticized Spurrier’s lack of effort on the recruiting trail during the tail end of his tenure as a reason for his demise, but this story is beyond what many expected. For the Head Ball Coach to be completely unaware of the nation’s top linebacker prospect being on campus, or even acknowledge his existence is somewhat bewildering.
