Grad assistant-turned-QB1 Zeb Noland has South Carolina 2-0 heading into the game against No. 2 Georgia. Noland has started two games in the absence of Luke Doty, the former top-100 recruit from the class of 2020.

Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer shared the latest on Doty, who has been recovering from a fall camp foot injury, during his Sunday media teleconference.

John Whittle of The Big Spur transcribed Beamer’s media teleconference, sharing what the coach said about his second-year QB.

“Luke Doty practiced tonight and did quite a bit more in practice than he did last Sunday. We fully expect him to be 100 percent on Saturday night in Athens,” Beamer said on the teleconference.

Beamer said Doty won’t play until he’s 100 percent ready.

“I’m not going to put Luke out there before he’s 100 percent,” Beamer said Sunday night. “Luke has got to be able to get into live team reps and live 7-on-7 reps, feel good, be able to execute and also feel good the next day. We’ll see how practice goes. We were only on the practice field about 45 minutes tonight, so that Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday practice will be critical.”

Beamer brushed off concerns about Doty’s first in-game reps of the 2021 season coming against Georgia’s elite defense.

“When Luke’s ready to play, Luke will go,” Beamer said. “He has to go out there and get game action at some point. Whether it’s against Georgia, Eastern Illinois or the Green Bay Packers, whenever we need to put him out there, we’ll put him out there.”

Considering Green Bay gave up 38 points to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, the Packers defense might be a more favorable matchup than Kirby Smart’s squad.
