Five SEC teams were ranked in Monday’s AP Preseason Top 25: 1. Alabama, 3. Georgia, 9. Auburn, 18. Mississippi State and 25. LSU.

One notable team that wasn’t ranked was South Carolina. While everyone is talking about whether LSU deserves to be ranked or not, the team South Carolina should have replaced was No. 24 Oregon. The Gamecocks are just a better football team right now.

When asked which team either inside the top 25 or outside that isn’t getting enough respect, the Gamecocks immediately jumped out to ESPN’s Tom Luginbill.

“South Carolina without question in my mind,” Luginbill said. “I’m a big schedule guy — who you play, when do you play and where do you play, and when you look at this team coming off of nine wins, a big bowl win versus Michigan a year ago, virtually their roster returning intact, improvement along the line of scrimmage on both sides of the football, and then, the schedule. No Alabama, no Auburn, no LSU out of the West, and you get Georgia Week 2 at home.

“How South Carolina is not ranked, I have no idea,” Luginbill continued. “Even if you were to put them 21 to 25. I would have put them 17 to 22 and let them get a win if they can get it versus Georgia, and then, off they go. But there’s a lot of components that are really strong for this team that are back.”

The eyes of college football fans will be on Week 2 when South Carolina hosts Georgia. ESPN’s College GameDay may make an appearance, too, as it sets up perfectly for Will Muschamp and company to pull off a major upset.

We thought during the Mark Richt-Steve Spurrier eras that South Carolina and Georgia was the SEC’s most underrated rivalry game, and if USC can pull off the upset, it would ignite this rivalry once again.
