South Carolina lost another piece of its coaching staff on Tuesday in Jody Wright.

Wright reportedly left the program to become the next head coach at Murray State. The assistant coached tight ends at South Carolina for the last 2 seasons. Other colleges that Wright has worked for include UAB (2018), Alabama (2010-2012, 2015-2017), Jacksonville State (2013), and Mississippi State (2005-2009) in various assistant roles.

Before heading to Columbia to join Shane Beamer’s staff, Wright spent time in the NFL. Wright was a defensive assistant with the New York Giants in 2020. He then became an offensive assistant on Joe Judge’s staff in 2021. Wright also spent time with the Cleveland Browns in 2019 working with running backs.

Wright coached the likes of Trey Knox and Joshua Simon this season. Both players finished inside the top 5 in receiving yards for South Carolina this year. Knox was 2nd on the team with 312 receiving yards behind Xavier Legette.

South Carolina missed out on bowl season for the 1st time in Beamer’s tenure in Columbia in 2023. The Gamecocks entered the final regular season game at 5-6, but ultimately lost to Clemson.

There have been some changes to the staff at South Carolina as of late. Montario Hardesty was fired after an unsuccessful stint as RB coach. However, Beamer is reportedly bringing on James Coley from Georgia in an offensive assistant role.
