It’s been a long — and busy — week for South Carolina President Robert Caslen.

Still new in his job, Caslen has been on a speaking tour around the state to introduce himself, and along the way, he stopped in various newsrooms like the Florence Morning News and Greenville News. During those visits, he made comments about the future of coach Will Muschamp, and both times issued statements after the meetings that either recanted or clarified his comments. Both newspapers also released audio recordings of the interviews after he questioned the accuracy of their reporting.

Those statements and interviews came after Athletics Director Ray Tanner himself issued a statement in support of Muschamp, and then explained why he made it in a radio interview and a brief exchange with reporters following the Texas A&M loss.

“Our Athletic Director and I support Will Muschamp, and we look forward to him being our coach next year and for seasons to come,” Caslen said in the statement.

The 4-7 Gamecocks are off this week and return to action next week against Clemson.
