South Carolina has been in the market for an outside linebackers coach since Mike Peterson was hired to the same position at Florida, returning the the program where he starred in the late 1990s.

And it appears that Shane Beamer is looking to the NFL to fill the vacancy. According to Chris Clark and Wes Mitchell from Rivals.com affiliate Gamecock Central, the Gamecocks will hire Sterling Lucas, currently the assistant defensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Per Clark and Mitchell, the university’s Board of Trustees is set to meet on Friday afternoon, where the contract of Lucas should be formally approved.

Lucas joined the Jaguars after 5 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, where he started as a defensive assistant and strength and conditioning assistant before eventually becoming an assistant linebackers and defensive line coach. That came after several seasons on the staff of NC State, his alma mater.

It’s a homecoming for Lucas, who is from an hour outside of Columbia, S.C.
